George Washington

  • When George was only 11 his father died; he looked up to his half brother, Lawrence, as his new role model.
  • He was the Commander in Chief of Continental Army during the American Revolution from 1775-1783.
  • He was the only president elected unanimously by the electoral college; he also won his second election unanimously.
  • He created the tradition of serving as president for only two terms and established the cabinet system with only three positions.
  • He had faith in Divine Providence, and he followed his own moral code of right and wrong.
  • He had no children of his own, but he was devoted to the son and daughter of his wife, Martha, by her first marriage.
  • He demonstrated skill in mathematics and surveying; he was competent as a field surveyor by the age of 15. He spent several years as a land surveyor.
  • He selected John Jay as the first Chief Justice.
