Nancy Reagan - A First Lady's Style:

Nancy Reagan -- A First Lady's Style, The newest exhibit at The Reagan Library, illustrates the important roles Mrs. Reagan played in the White House -- from hostess and ambassador, to public servant and spokesperson, to loyal and caring wife -- by exhibiting over 80 of her dresses, suits and gowns. The dresses displayed span over fifty years - beginning with her March 4, 1952 wedding dress and ending with the skirt suit she wore to President Reagan's funeral in June of 2004.

This historic exhibit not only honors Mrs. Reagan, but also pays tribute to the men and women who helped define her style. The exhibit displays designs by Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Valentino Garavani, James Galanos, Carolina Herrera, Adolfo, Yves St. Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Jean Louis and Chanel.

The exhibit will run through November 10, 2008.

The exhibit was designed by WRJ Design Associates, LLC. in collaboration with the Reagan Library staff.

Forever Free - Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation:

• On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, “[that] all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State…shall be then, thenceforward… forever free.” And thus began the Emancipation Proclamation, a presidential order which freed slaves in those States that did not return to Union control. Forever Free – Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, a new exhibition designed and staged by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, follows the story of slavery and Abraham Lincoln’s role in ending it.

Running August 22, 2008 through October 24, 2008, Forever Free will provide a glimpse into Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. The exhibit will include hand-signed letters and manuscripts by Abraham Lincoln, including a California Emancipation Proclamation – a copy printed in California in 1864 and signed by President Lincoln for commemorative purposes, one of only three known to exist. The exhibit will also display some of Abraham Lincoln’s personal effects, including a handkerchief monogrammed by Mary Todd Lincoln, an 1831 law book from the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office in Springfield, Illinois and a Paris porcelain purple ground chamber pot from the Lincoln White House. The exhibit will also contain a photographical timeline of slavery throughout the ages, beginning with the 1760 B.C. Code of Hammurabi which declared that slaves could be sold or inherited and ending with the proposal and ratification of the Constitution’s 13th amendment in 1865 stating that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude…shall exist within the United States…”

Lecture and Booksigning with Barry M. Goldwater, Jr. :

• On Monday October 6th, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library welcomes Barry Goldwater, Jr., the Senator's son and an eighth-term California Congressman, for a lecture and book signing of his latest book, Pure Goldwater. With author John Dean, he explores the complicated figure in this "scrap book" of journal excerpts, correspondence, and other primary testimony from Senator Barry Goldwater. The book signing and lecture are free however, reservations are required to attend the lecture. Register online at www.reaganlibrary.com/events or call the Reagan Foundation at 805-522-2977.

Barry Goldwater was a defining figure in American public life, a firebrand politician associated with an optimistic brand of conservatism. In an era which American conservatism has lost its way, his legacy is more important than ever. For over 50 years, in those moments when he was away from the political fray, Senator Goldwater kept a private journal, recording his reflections on a rich political and personal life. Here bestselling author John Dean and Barry Goldwater, Jr. combine analysis with Goldwater's own words. With unprecedented access to his correspondence, interviews, and behind-the-scenes conversations, Dean sheds new light on this political figure. From the late Senator's honest thoughts on Richard Nixon to his growing discomfort with the rise of the extreme right, Pure Goldwater offers a revelatory look at an American icon and also reminds us of a more hopeful alternative to the dispiriting political landscape of today.
